GSM vs. CDMA

CDMA: stands for Code Division Multiple Access. Both data and voice are separated from signals using codes and then transmited using a wide frequency range. Because of this, there are more space left for data transfer (this was one of the reasons why CDMA is the prefered technology for the 3G generation, which is broadband access and the use of big multimedia messages). 14% of the worldwide market goes to CDMA. For the 3G generation CDMA uses 1x EV-DO and EV-DV. It has a lot of users in Asia, specially in South Korea.

GSM: stands for Global System Mobile. Even though it is sold as "the latest technology" in several countries, this technology is older than CDMA (and also TDMA). But keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that GSM is inferior or worse than CDMA. Roaming readiness and fraud prevention are two major advantages from this technology. GSM is the most used cell phone technology in the world, with 73% of the worldwide market. It has a very strong presence in Europe.

The TDMA technology is used less than the three main digital technologies (GSM, CDMA and TDMA) and we thought that it will be replaced gradually CDMA or the GSM. That one is because the GSM against CDMA war. In a corner, the operators of the GSM say that he is better “because he uses a SIM shaving, he it is the technology more used everywhere, is safer and it is outpost”. In the other corner, the CDMA followers say that he is better “because 3G is the generation chosen technology and the GSM will emigrate to CDMA since CDMA is advanced…” But that one of these declarations is correct? Acordingly to Nokia, “this discussion is more not on technology, but on market”. We thought that this one is the best way to describe the war between these technologies of the telephone of two cells. In the principle, the GSM was in fact superior. It had more services and it allowed more data transfer. Pero CDMA, facing the advantages of the standard of the competitor, soon gave the same characteristics found in the GSM. Nowadays, it is not possible to say that the services of the GSM are better than CDMA. The messages of the multiaverages, the video, the access of high speed of the Internet, the digital camera and the PDA function are even some of the characteristics that we can find in both technologies. New technology of CDMA 1XRTT, that sees what beforehand they will bring the telephones of the G3 cell, is outpost that the EDGE, technology of the principle of the generation 3G, allowing higher tariffs of transference. The advantage of the card of the GSM SIM, of which it allows you change your telephone of the cell and to keep your list from the telephone, is even being surplaced by the operators of some CDMA with a service that allows to warehouses your book of telephone in the data base of the operator, allowing that you recover your book of telephone although that your telephone of the cell robs (who is not possible with the GSM, since then if your telephone of the cell robs, your card of SIM will be robbed together). To notice that a new called reserve accessory of SIM was sent recently, that allows you to the reserve that the data stored in your SIM card. Also some operators of the GSM are offering a service of similar reserve. Therefore, both technologies are nowadays equiparated in technology, but this picture will not be like that one in the future. Afterall, land of the evolution of CDMA is wider and in some years he will be superior that the GSM. This means that the operators of the GSM want to disapear? Absolutely. They will emigrate on CDMA and the war will continue, because the existing operators of CDMA chose to use the technologies of 1xEV-DO and1XEV-DV for their network 3G and the existing operators of the GSM have decided on a diverse technology, call WCDMA. Also, even though the present operators of the GSM will emigrate to WCDMA, they still can use their existing network of the GSM. The users will not feel so any special thing when the operators change of position to the new generation of the cell (3G), independently of the technology who choose.
